William B Mathis born: 20 MAY 1808 in Washington County, Georgia, and died: aft 1867 in Upshur Co., Texas. By 1842 he was living in Tippah Co., Miss. The 1854 Texas Census shows the family in Upshur County and in 1855 Elder & Charter Member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Upshur Co., Tx. William was a school teacher. During the Civil War he enlisted as a Sergeant in the Confederate States Army at Paris, Tx. in Company D of a 'regular' Texas infantry regiment 10th Texas Regiment Cleburne's Division with rolls showing as W. B. Matthews and with sons Jacob, William and Joseph DeKalb Mathis. This section lists only deaths and I feel there are other pages but I have no access to those.
