the countryside and taking the cemetery pictures for us.
Take Hwy 155 north from Big Sandy. Turn left on FM 1002, the cemetery is about a mile or so down the road... On the right you will see the arched gate, and there is a road that is right after that goes up to the cemetery. This is a very well kept cemetery.....there are lots of upright native stones marking graves, with no inscriptions. Thanks go to Jane Horn for the headstone pictures. They are not her family, just pictures she had access to. As hard as we all try, we are human and sometimes
when reading a cemetery we miss a grave covered with leaves, fireants,
or bushes. Sometimes the headstone has sunk and is mostly underground.
Our area also has many graves only marked with iron ore rocks and even
many unmarked graves. There are headstones that have long ago been destroyed
by the elements or even vandalizm, and are hard to impossible to read
the details. We would appreciate it if you would let us know if you
did not find your relative which was buried Thanks to Eunice Hoover Mitchell for the following story about how Hoover Cemetery came to be! My family (Hoover) lived in Upshur Co. from around 1846 until late 1800s. My Dads family - Hoovers and Osborns moved to Hopkins County around 1898. The Hoover cemetery in Upshur County was named for our family. I believe the community is called Pleasant Grove and earlier was called Nubbin Ridge. It is near Big Sandy. I believe the cemetery was on my G G grandfather, Abraham Hoovers land. The story is that when they had just come to Texas from Indiana, a daughter died and the creek was flooded so that they couldn't get across so they buried her there and thus the cemetery was started. I don't have any proof of that but looking at his property on the map it appears that the cemetery is on what was his property. Read July 28, 2001 by Sharon Pierce ( denotes same headstone Erin Lee
