Lee Cemetery is on private property, and took numerous phone calls by Tom Mitchell, board member of the Upshur County Historical Museum, to get to the right people so that we could get permission to go into the cemetery. Yesterday, January 19, 2002, we decided to give it a try. Accompanied by Tom Mitchell, my son Steven Newman, his wife Cheryl, and son Jason, we trecked in close to a mile, on foot. The graves are scattered over a little less than an acre. There are quite a few unmarked graves, some that we have notated. It is overgrown, and a lot of the stones are on the ground. We read every stone that we could find, but feel there is a possibility that we may have missed some, as there is a thick carpet of pine needles across the whole cemetery. As hard as we all try, we are human and sometimes
when reading a cemetery we miss a grave covered with leaves, fireants,
or bushes. Sometimes the headstone has sunk and is mostly underground.
Our area also has many graves only marked with iron ore rocks and even
many unmarked graves. There are headstones that have long ago been destroyed
by the elements or even vandalizm, and are hard to impossible to read
the details. We would appreciate it if you would let us know if you
did not find your relative which was buried Thanks go to Steven Newman for the added pictures! Respectfully submitted: Unreadable FHM stone with top half
